Maido, Okini!

Small stream running through the garden at Zenrinji Temple in Kyoto, Japan

Maido, okini is the friendly greeting often heard in the shops and business in the western region of Japan called Kansai. Okini is the local word for thank you and maido refers to a visit by a regular customer.

This website explores the Kansai region, or Kinki region, which includes the prefectures of Hyogo, Kyoto, Mie, Nara, Osaka, Shiga, and Wakayama. As a region where much of the roots exist for Japanese society, history, and culture, it is an excellent place to learn about Japan while discovering the great scenic beauty, passionate people, and delicious food of the Kansai region.

The emphasis here is to present a glimpse of Kansai from a personal perspective in the hope that a virtual experience will eventually lead to a lived one.
